Crowds flocked to Shoreham Beach for the community parade, bonfire and fireworks, organised by residents.

Horrendous weather had forced Shoreham Bonfire Society to cancel last year’s event, and the day began blustery again this year but by the evening, the worst of the wind and rain was over.

Stuart Lanham, one of the organisers, said: “It all went really well. Given the weather leading up to it, and during the bonfire building, it was a great relief when calm weather returned.”

For the first time, a portion of the money raised will be given to charity. The rest goes into the pot for next year’s event.

Money collected is being counted today and an announcement on the figure raised for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice will be made tomorrow.

Stuart added: “We ran out of bags yesterday evening, which can only be a good thing. I am genuinely excited about it as we have never been able to give money to charity before and it feels like completing the whole community project thing.”
