Gallery: Battle of Britain flypast over Worthing

Crowds lined the pier and seafront in Worthing to catch a glimpse of revered wartime aircraft on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain yesterday afternoon.

Photographer Peter Pollack managed to capture the commemorative flypasts as they went over Worthing. His pictures can be seen in the gallery above.

Planes, including Spitfires, Hurricanes and Blenheim bombers, took off from the Goodwood Aerodrome – formerly known as RAF Westhampnett and home to two fighter squadrons – at around 2pm.

Prince Harry was present at the Aerodrome and had been due to fly, but a mechanical fault with his plane meant he had to watch from the ground.

The gathering of Battle of Britain aircraft was the largest since the Second World War.

On September 15, 1940, the RAF managed to overcome two large waves of attacks from the Luftwaffe. The battle saw 60 German and 26 RAF aircraft destroyed. The day was coined the Battle of Britain.

Hitler postponed his planned invasion of Britain in the days following the defeat.
