Adur Sea of Lights had a River Adur theme this year and a giant dragonfly was among the larger items on parade.

Creative director Andrea Ballance said: “It was stunning. People don’t really give Lancing very much credit but this event is really gathering a powerful community.

“We would like to thank everybody. I am completely blown away and everything people have put in they will get back because of the knock-on effect for the community.

“I have been really impressed by the schools, who have all got involved. We rely completely on volunteers and we try to make it inclusive so that everyone can get involved.”

Electric Storm Youth, the marching band of TS Intrepid NTC, Scouts and Girlguiding groups also joined the parade.

Andrea and her team of volunteers launched Adur Sea of Lights in November, 2013, having come up with the idea of putting on a fun, free, artistic community event for children in the area.

Andrea added: “It improves the village in so many ways, including safety and security, and I feel very strongly about that. The parade performs a massive function, it is not just pretty, it has a grassroots job to do.

“I am incredibly proud of it. I set it up to help businesses, give mums involved something for their CVs and provide something for elderly people to get involved with. It has been awesome.”

Entertainment at Monks Recreation Ground included Shoreham Allstars, Street Kidz, Marta Scott Dance Company, The Daytonas and The Silhouette Show.

Worthing town crier Bob Smytherman led the countdown to the parade, which was hosted by Karen Etherington and featured special guests Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Shoreham and Southwick Rotary Club was the chosen charity and its Santa sleigh, complete with lit Christmas tree, joined the parade.

Organisers are already looking for sponsorship to keep the event going. Visit www.seaoflights.co.uk for more information.
