The aim is to improve cooking skills and healthy eating habits by training up cookery leaders.

The two-day Train the Trainer course will be run by Health Champions Training at the Fishersgate Centre, West Road, on November 12 and 13, from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

It is free to groups from Adur and Worthing, and is particularly targeted at those supporting young carers, older people and families living in the area.

The cookery leader training is designed to equip volunteers with the skills needed to run Cook and Eat courses for their community groups and members. They will be given a handbook, recipes, online resources and mentoring.

Courses have already been run successfully at Community House in East Worthing and Southlanders Community Group in Shoreham.

Later this year, Health Champions will be supporting the Phoenix Group, in West Durrington, schools, and children and family centres, delivering cooking groups for parents.

Liane Webb and Caroline Middleton, who attended a course in Worthing in May, have now become part-time course leaders for Health Champions.

Liane said: “I had started to run cooking sessions within the Community House and I wanted to improve the structure of the programme and gain new recipe ideas.

“Following the two-day cookery leader course, I gained confidence and learned how to put the course together. There was also a lot of support from Health Champions.”

Caroline added: “The cookery leader course and mentoring has given me the confidence to use the skills I have to help other people.

“I have really enjoyed empowering other people who don’t think they have any skills, to cook a meal from scratch and feel proud of doing so.

“I have seen the changes in people throughout the cookery courses and I am proud to be part of the Cook and Eat programmes.”

Volunteers with an interest in cooking are needed for a few hours each week to help community groups run Cook and Eat courses. Contact Karen Dennison, director at Health Champions, on 07747017372 for more information.
