Social enterprise company Health Champions, in partnership with Adur and Worthing Wellbeing, is launching a new series of healthy cooking courses for parents to learn ways to cook with their children.

The six-week Cooking with Confidence course for people in the Adur district will be held at St Peter’s Church, in Bownness Avenue, Sompting, starting on Monday, September 12.

There are two sessions, from 10am to midday and 12pm to 2pm, which are open to parents, carers, grandparents and children.

A similar course for people in the Worthing area will start at Worthing High School, South Farm Road, Worthing, on Wednesday, September 7, from 6pm to 8pm.

The course offers hands-on help for creating easy, low-cost and healthy meals from scratch and encourages people to cook more often. Free ingredients, tasty recipes and lunch are provided.

Heather West, Health Champions course leader, said: “Many people have never been shown how to cook a meal from scratch, so we teach them in hands-on, fun cooking sessions.

“Our sessions offer hands-on help for creating tasty, easy, low-cost and healthy meals the whole family will enjoy. Preparing from scratch means you know exactly what has gone into your meal and you can control the amount of fat, salt and any sugar.”

The aim is to improve confidence in the kitchen, offer ideas for family meals and give practical tips to encourage children to try new foods.

Participants cook and eat the meals together at each session and there is the option of taking home extra portions.

They will learn cookery skills to prepare healthier family meals and budgeting for healthy meals. As well as healthy meal ideas, they will be given ideas on how to adapt traditional recipes to make them healthier.
