The chain has officially been named as being part of the £15million investment to convert Worthing’s Montague Centre into a restaurant destination. While Prezzo and Bill’s Restaurant are said to be likely to confirm their places imminently.

It follows news confirmed in June that the anchor tenant for the scheme would be Patisserie Valerie.

Nando’s confirmed its place last week, while Worthing town centre manager Sharon Clarke stated on Tuesday that Prezzo and Bill’s restaurant were in ‘last-minute negotiations but are almost ready’ to confirm their spots.

The news of Nandos’ arrival next year sparked a stream of comments on the Herald’s Facebook page, with one pleased member saying she ‘will no longer have to drive all the way to Crawley’ to enjoy the popular eatery.

A Nando’s spokesman confirmed the arrival and said the firm was ‘delighted to be opening in Worthing after being on the radar for a very long time’. The eatery is set to open at the end of next year.

Permission for the development of the Montague Centre was granted in June, when Worthing Borough Council’s planning committee unanimously approved the plan by New River Retail, which includes a new glass kiosk and change of use of several retail units for restaurants.

The plans were supported by Worthing Town Centre Initiative and Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce, with the investment welcomed by businesses. But the Worthing Society, supported by a petition of more than 3,000 signatures, opposed the loss of three sycamore trees in favour of the kiosk, however a key part of the proposal was to remove and replace the trees.

Sharon Clarke, Worthing town centre manager, said: “We very much supported these new developments as these businesses are
what Worthing are calling out for.

“These are the types of restaurants people leave Worthing to go to and we want to give these to them.”

She added 80 per cent of people who visit the town centre live in Worthing and it must ‘meet the needs of Worthing’s loyal customer base’.
