Forum presents its 15-year vision for Shoreham Beach

Residents of Shoreham Beach aired their views on the draft proposals for a neighbourhood plan at two lively events last week.

More than 200 people attended the Harbour Club sessions to listen to the proposals, which outline a vision for the area over the next 15 years.

The proposals were developed by volunteer group the Shoreham Beach Neighbourhood Forum, who collected residents’ views over a two-year period.

A spokesperson for the group said there was a good turnout at both events, with a diverse range of attendees.

A busy schedule of presentations informed residents about different aspects of the plan.

James Fuller from the Environment Agency gave a detailed explanation of the tidal wall works.

The forum’s working groups proposed creating designated green spaces, an indoor community facility in the proposed cafe development and setting up a neighbourhood design review panel.

A presentation by the Friends of Shoreham Beach emphasised the importance of the nature reserve.

Urban planning specialists AECOM presented options for a new school site, parking solutions, allotments and housing.

James Appleton, chief planner at Adur and Worthing District Council, explained that the neighbourhood plan would be a legal document taken into account by the committee when deciding on planning applications.

A video produced by eco-designer Mike Whelan used computer graphics to bring to life residents’ suggestions for the area.

Mr Whelan said: “It was great to see younger residents engage with the process through watching the video - they started to understand the potential benefits of the plan and how they could contribute.”

Dawn Clenton-Sparey, SBNF chairman, said: “We are really encouraged by how many people have got involved with the Neighbourhood Plan so far – and the brilliant ideas they’ve put forward.”

Feedback forms, available online, will now be analysed by the forum in order to refine the plan.

The exhibits from last week’s event have been uploaded to the website for members of the public to view.

Once all the feedback is processed, the forum will begin preparing a pre-submission consultation draft plan, which will be open to a public consultation before being delivered to the council.
