Former England star Sir Trevor Brooking opens Worthing Town Football Club’s new Palatine Park facilities

CROWDS welcomed former England footballer Sir Trevor Brooking for the launch of Worthing Town Football Club’s new facilities.

The joint venture with Worthing Borough Council to forge a new clubhouse at Palatine Park and improve its playing pitches has been welcomed as a exceeding all the team’s expectations.

After years in planning, the £1.4million scheme is set to significantly enhance the fortunes of the club, which had previously been forced to play at various venues around Worthing.

Hundreds of aspiring young footballers and their families gathered for a tour of the revamped site. Former West Ham star Sir Trevor, who is now head of football development at the Football Association, said that he was “sure it would be a real success.”

Club chairman Ian Stewart added: “This is just fantastic as it has been so long in the making. We’ve been planning this for the last seven and a half years. It is phenomenal to have got to this stage and I think the kids are going to really like playing here. There’s been a lot of hard work involved but we’ve found that the council has been fantastic in supporting us with it.

“This isn’t just something for the club, it is something for the whole of Worthing and it’s great that we’ve been able to get it in this economic climate.”
