Moira Hardy said the subway at Chapel Road near her home regularly becomes blocked with water after heavy rain, leaving it unusable.

“It’s been going on for some time,” she said. “It was just as bad last year. No one seems to have done anything about it.”

She said the underpass was ‘particularly useful’ for her as she was ‘quite slow’.

“I can do it at my own pace,” she said. “I can’t at the moment, I’m having to go a lot further to try and avoid crossing at the signals.”

She called on the council to find a solution, adding: “I think it’s quite a serious problem.”

West Sussex County Council said: “We have investigated and one of the pumps at the subway is faulty.

“We will resolve the problem as soon as possible and apologise for any inconvenience in the meantime.”

The spokesman added: “We would like to thank the Herald for bringing this to our attention as it had not been reported to us.

“We would urge residents to please report issues directly to us via the county council’s website, or by calling 01243 642105, so we can resolve problems as quickly as possible.
