Firefighters tackle blaze in dustbin lorry

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a blaze in the back of a recycling lorry which broke out on Manor Road in Upper Beeding on Tuesday morning.

Around four tonnes of cardboard caught fire in the back of the lorry at just after 8.30am.

One crew from Shoreham and one from Storrington tackled the blaze, forcing their way into the back of the lorry using hydraulic cutting equipment.

Firefighters estimate that around half a ton of the waste was burned.

The lorry was then taken back to a depot in Storrington where it was handed over to Horsham District Council’s environmental services department and emptied.

The lorry’s driver and passengers reported hearing a bang the back of the truck before calling 999.

The firefighters’ report said the fire had started accidentally and that everyone involved had escaped unhurt.
