Firefighter strike called off

THE SECOND firefighter strike due to take place for five hours on Saturday has been called off.

The strike by the Fire Brigades Union was meant to start at 6.30pm.

The FBU said the decision came about after progress in talks over pensions.

The government originally stated firefighters should work up until 60 but the FBU said that this was too old for the job.

The FBU has now been presented with a pension which will safeguard workers between the ages of 55 and 60.

This essentially means that if a firefighter is not fit enough to work between these ages and if another role connot be found for them they will still retire with a full pension,

However a final decision has not yet been reached as further negotiations are due to take place.
