West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS) has released the first of several films which will showcase its broader role in improving the health and wellbeing of local communities.

“As part of the West Sussex County Council’s Communities and Public Protection Directorate the fire and rescue service plays an integral role in helping to make individuals, families and communities safer, stronger and more resilient in West Sussex,” said a statement from WSFRS.

“Whilst firefighters are probably best known for responding to 999 calls to tackle fires and other emergency incidents, in recent years the Service has developed its prevention role considerably and now works proactively with its partners at the heart of the local communities to protect its most vulnerable residents.

“The new three minute film, which has been produced in-house, highlights how the Service’s Home Safety Visits are helping thousands of older residents in West Sussex to remain living safely and independently in their own homes.

“The film, which can be viewed here, is the first in a planned short series to showcase how West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is working closely with partners from inside and outside of the county council to help build safer and more resilient communities.”

Area Manager for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Neil Stocker, said: “It’s natural that when people think of the fire service, they think of the flashing blue lights and our life-saving work at fires and road traffic collisions. However, our ability to make a positive difference to communities in West Sussex goes far beyond our first class emergency response service.

“Home Safety Visits have been at the heart of our prevention agenda for many years. We visit more than 6,000 homes each year and this has undoubtedly reduced the number and severity of fires in the home. Whilst the visits primarily focus on fire safety they also give us an opportunity to assist people with wider health and wellbeing issues.

“By simply signposting or referring to our partners we can help people access the additional support they may need. This could be help to prevent a fall in the home, support for those in a caring role, crime or scam prevention advice, assistance to reduce social isolation as well as a range of other information or support services.”
