A spokesman for SGN confirmed that engineers at the scene started resurfacing the road at around 4pm, before reopening the road at around 7.30pm.

Explaining the possible cause of the leak, the spokesman said: “There are a number of factors that can cause gas pipes to leak.

“The ground is constantly moving under the weight of traffic and moisture in the soil, and this can damage the pipes over the years.

“Heavy traffic can dislodge the joints on the pipes causing leaks as can the moisture in the ground (from rain, snow etc) which can cause iron pipes and joints to corrode.”
