According to GoFundMe, which is organising the appeal, Taz Moyo was walking along Halewick Lane with friends to his house in Sompting when he was in collision with a car on Saturday, July 16.

Sussex Police said that they were called to the scene at 8.30pm and that the driver, a 21-year-old woman from Lancing, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Taz was treated at the scene and airlifted to Southampton General Hospital, where he is still in a coma.

His aunt Farai Mhende said: “The forceful nature of his injuries caused significant swelling of his brain which in turn impacted his vital organs. This resulted in a number of emergency procedures in the first 24 hours to keep him alive.

“One of the procedures meant that Taz had a significant amount of skull bone removed to relieve the immense pressure on his brain. The prognosis for survival was not positive and Taz was put into a medically induced coma and his family remain by his side as his condition remains critical.”

She added that doctors couldn’t say if Taz would recover or to what degree, but that it would take months.

“Taz’s survival so far is testament to his strength, resilience and the amazing care he is receiving in intensive care at the Southampton General hospital.”

The fund has been set up to financially support his mother Claire Moyo and his father Brian Moyo, who is unable to work due to a leg injury which requires surgery that he sustained two days after Taz’s accident.

His Aunt Farai Mhende said: “This is why we have set up this GoFundMe appeal, to help Claire and Brian so that they can focus on the immediate needs of their family, including Taz’s little sister, rather than worrying about whether they might lose their house.

“Assisting them with their bills will enable them to continue to help Taz fight and continue to stay by his side. Any help you can offer financially, however small, will all add up and relieve some of the immense pressure on the family at this emotional and stressful time.”
