Children took part in the Big Draw event last Monday, either by creating their own sailing vessel or colouring in shapes provided.

The High Street museum opened specially for the event, using the paintings on display for this year’s Maritime exhibition to inspire the youngsters.

Museums officer Emma O’Connor said the children were able to colour in their own brig, galleon or steamer to make an enormous Shoreham flotilla.

They were also able to create a mini puppet to take home.

The majority of the museum’s paintings are associated with Shoreham’s long tradition of ship building, ship owning and seafaring and the paintings on display for Maritime covered ship portraiture, general maritime views of Shoreham and others relay a narrative of an historical event.

The museum is generally closed for the winter, re-opening fully in May next year.

Although the season has finished, the museum will be open for late-night Christmas shopping on Tuesday, December 2, from 5pm to 9pm. There will also be the annual Christmas fair.
