The Eastbourne lifeboat service tweeted that this morning, one of its volunteer inshore lifeboat crews joined the coastguard and police in a search for missing people.

The operation began after a car was found empty after being left overnight near Beachy Head, a chalk cliff popular with tourists.

Eventually the teams located the car's owners at Cow Gap.

According to the RNLI, the pair were from London and had gone camping there.

Under the current lockdown rules, people are not allowed to leave the place where they live 'without reasonable excuse', such as medical reasons.

Police officers have the power to issue fines of £60 on the spot if the rules have been broken.
