The talk, which is open to the public, is being held on Monday at Southwick Community Centre, in Southwick Street, at 7.30pm.

Shoreham’s historic 19th century fort will be the special story of the talk, which will be told by Gary Baines, chairman of the Friends of Shoreham, who will give a ‘unique insight into its unique and diverse history’ – including its links to the Charge of the Light Brigade and Only Fools and Horses actor, Nicholas Lyndhurst.

Nigel Divers, secretary of the Southwick Society, said: “This promises to be a fascinating talk about a little known part of our local military history and we would like to invite everybody who is interested in our local heritage.”

A period of extreme tension with France in the mid-19th century led to fears of war and invasion. In Sussex, forts were built to defend the ports of Shoreham, Newhaven and Littlehampton. A state of the art fort mounting heavy guns was built at the then ‘remote’ eastern tip of Shoreham beach to control the harbour mouth. Friends of Shoreham Fort, a volunteering group now look after the fort as part of our historic heritage.

Admission price to attend is £4 or £2 for members of the Southwick Society.
