THIEVES have stolen a digger from the Southwick Green play park renovation site.

Mums who helped organise the new play area have slammed those responsible for targeting a project aimed at children.

The Cricketers pub, which is opposite the play area, also made an appeal for information, via Facebook.

The post read: “At approximately 10.30pm on Friday evening, one of the diggers was stolen from the new playground site on Southwick Green. If anyone saw anything suspicious or has any information please contact Sussex Police on 101.”

Southwick Green Community Team has done most of the work towards planning and designing the play area.

Member Fiona Dunn said: “We would love to shame them. Even if they don’t have children, their friends or family will have children. Little toddlers. And how has stealing a digger helped them? Only little children are hurt by them being stupid.”

Sussex Police said they received a call at 9.20am on Saturday, following the theft of a digger from the play area building site, opposite Southwick Square.

A spokesman said: “The digger was being used to build a new children’s play area and was stolen late on Friday night or early on Saturday morning.

“Anyone with information should email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 397 of 14/02, call 101 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
