PLAYWRIGHT Janet Behan was ‘dazzled’ by the response to the new Market Theatre she set up in Shoreham.

The launch at Shoreham Methodist Church hall on Saturday saw around 30 to 40 people watch a rehearsed reading of Janet’s play, The Scrapmonger.

The play was set in 2060, with Libby Longhurst playing a green campaigner called Karen Greymire, who has been sedated in an institution following dramatic action at Whitehall.

A lively half-hour discussion about the themes followed, something Janet said was an essential part of the creative process.

“I can’t tell you how dazzled I am,” she said. “The turnout was totally unexpected and overwhelming.”

Market Theatre will run once a month, to tie in with Shoreham Farmer’s Market, with the next one on May 9. There will be a rehearsed reading of a new play each time, starting at 1pm, with discussion time to follow. Entry is £3, to include refreshments.
