The fire took hold of a ground floor flat in Rowlands Road at around 4pm today, Sunday, December 6.

No one was injured and that could well have been down to the fast actions of the cyclist, named as Nathan Stack.

“Currently they are not allowed back in the building so are awaiting further advice from the fire brigade,” he wrote on Facebook at around 5pm.

“Acrid smoke from the burning plastics has permeated the area, the building will need some ventilating before it will be safe to permit re-entry, dozens of bystanders and neighbours watched the drama.”

A large number of firefighters, police and ambulance crews attended, and the emergency services was still at the scene at 6pm.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
