Sussex Police is appealing for witnesses after the 18-year-old reported being followed with her friend after withdrawing money from the Tesco cashpoint at the southern end of South Farm Road at around 7.30pm.

From there the pair walked west along Tarring Road towards West Worthing Railway Station, when they noticed they were being followed by a man.

While waiting, the same man who had been following them grabbed the burgundy rucksack of the 18-year-old woman and ran away.

She gave chase back east along Tarring Road, before the man got in the passenger seat of a blue Fiat Punto, which headed east at speed towards Worthing town centre.

The victim and her friend were not harmed but were both shaken by the incident.

The man is described as white, slim, 6ft tall with an athletic build. He was wearing a grey hooded jumper with the hood up and a blue medical face covering.

A 31-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of robbery. The woman was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class B drug. They have been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Police investigating the matter would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened, or who may have any relevant CCTV or dash cam footage from the area at that time.

They are particularly keen to speak to a taxi driver who is thought to have witnessed the incident.
