Shoreham Post Office remains closed after robbery

Staff at Shoreham Post Office were left '˜traumatised' after they were threatened by two hooded men with a hammer and forced to hand over several thousand pounds.

The Brunswick Road Post Office has remained closed since the incident on Friday (January 22).

The premises was taped off after the robbery by two men in their 20s at around 5.25pm.

They are believed to have run away from the railway line with a bag in hand.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “At around 5.25pm two men broke into the rear of the Post Office in Brunswick Road.

“They threatened the staff with a hammer and took a large quantity of cash – believed to be several thousand pounds.

“Both males were wearing dark clothing with hoods covering their faces.

“They made away from the Post Office along Brunswick Road, away from the railway line, carrying a bag with them.

“The males may be in their 20s and were about 5ft 8in tall. No one was injured.”

The Post Office is set to re-open on Tuesday morning (January 26).

A Post Office spokesperson said: “Post Office Ltd can confirm a robbery took place at Shoreham Post Office on Friday afternoon.

“The people who run our Post Office branches provide important services to local communities.

“Any robbery or attempted robbery is very traumatic for the victims and we will be supporting the police in their efforts to apprehend those responsible.”

Businesses in Brunswick Road went unaware as they closed up for the day, some had even stood by the Post Office during the robbery without knowledge of the crime taking place.

Symon Todd of H.D. Tribe funeral directors said: “I finished here about 5.30pm. I went over there to post a letter in the outside post box about 5.31pm but didn’t hear anything.”

Manager of Just Bananas said she left the shop at 5.30pm but did not see a thing.

“It’s a shame because you wouldn’t think of something happening like that in your home town,” she said.

Rose Hill of Shoreham Carpet Centre said: “It’s a bit scary, but what can you do?”

Joan Cole is a Shoreham resident who tried to use the Post Office Monday afternoon, only to find it was still closed.

She said: “I’m very shocked. I didn’t thin it could happen here, but it’s understandable that they’re still closed.”

The Post Office has urged anyone with information to come forward and contact the police on 101.
