Police crackdown on drink-drivers across Sussex

A total of 102 arrests have been made in the county as part of Operation Dragonfly, launched by Surrey and Sussex Police, up to the end of Wednesday (16 December).

Of these, 50 have been charged.

Among them is James Smoothy, 26, a British Transport Police officer based at Gatwick Airport.

He was arrested in Copthorne Common Road, Copthorne, at 2.30am on Tuesday (December 15) and charged with having 98 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath in his system. The legal limit is 35.

He is due to appear before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on January 8.

Peter Hutchings, 28, a school caretaker, of Chandlers Mead in Cooksbridge, was arrested in Coldean Lane, Brighton, on December 10 and charged with having 69mg of alcohol per 100mlof breath in his system. He is due to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on December 31.

Eric Obareki, 38, a computer consultant, of Garland Road, East Grinstead, was arrested on the A22 at Wych Cross on December 11 and charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis. He is due to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on December 31.

Brian Dawkins, 58, unemployed, of Goring Road, Worthing, was arrested in Lyndhurst Road, East Worthing, on December 11 and charged with having 56mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system. He is due to appear before Worthing Magistrates’ Court on December 29.

Martins Strals, 55, a packer, of Sandringham Way, Bognor Regis, was arrested in Linden Road, Bognor Regis, on December 11 and charged with driving while unfit through drink and driving without a licence. He is due to appear before Worthing Magistrates’ Court on January 5.

Aaron Pratt, 33, a builder, of no fixed address, was arrested in Caves Road, St Leonards, on December 11 and charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, failing to stop after a road traffic collision and resisting arrest. He is due to appear before Hastings Magistrates’ Court on January 13.

Richard May, 65, retired, of Bishopric, Horsham, was arrested at Crawley Police Station on December 11 and charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis. He is due to appear before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on January 7.

Marc Oakden, 48, a manager, of Chandlers Field Drive, Haywards Heath, was arrested in Brighton Road, Crawley, on December 12 and charged with having 121mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system. He is due to appear before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on January 5.

Paul Brooker, 33, a groundsman, of Forest Dene, Crowborough, was arrested in Crowborough Road, Nutley, on December 12 and charged with having 49mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system. He is due to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on December 31.

Amy Downes, 25, a sales assistant, of Highwood Crescent, Horsham, was arrested in Worthing Road, Southwater, on December 12 and charged with having 78mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system. She is due to appear before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on January 15.

Juliet Adsett, 34, a youth worker, of Field End, Storrington, was arrested on the A27 at Beddingham on December 12 and charged with having 96mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system. She is due to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on January 11.

Jack Ayling, 28, a builder, of Heather Walk, Crowborough, was arrested at Boship Roundabout in Lower Dicker on December 12 and charged with having 58mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system, and driving without a valid test certificate. He is due to appear before Hastings Magistrates’ Court on December 30.

Arlene Mhandu, 31, a community worker, of Guildford Road in Chertsey, Surrey, was arrested in Bohemia Road, Hastings, on December 12 and charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis. She is due to appear before Hastings Magistrates’ Court on December 30.

Alison White, 51, a secretary, of Lincoln Close, Eastbourne, was arrested in Eastbourne Road, Willingdon, on December 12 and charged with having 92mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system. She is due to appear before Hastings Magistrates’ Court on December 30.

Daniel Nicolaou, 23, a plumber, of Walmer Crescent, Brighton, was arrested on the A23 at Bolney on December 12 and charged with having 54mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system. He is due to appear before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on January 6.

Amy Gibson, 30, a driver, of Common View in Midhurst, was arrested in Kennel Hill, Chichester, on December 12 and charged with having 96mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system. She is due to appear before Worthing Magistrates’ Court on January 5.

Steve Morement, 47, a carpenter, of Bexhill Road, St Leonards, was arrested in High Street, Battle, on December 13 and charged with having 71mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system. He is due to appear before Hastings Magistrates’ Court on December 30.

Gemma Studd, 31, a care assistant, of St Thomas’s Road, Worthing, was arrested in Findon Road, Worthing, on December 13 and charged with having 47mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system, failing to stop after a road traffic collision and possession of cocaine. She is due to appear before Worthing Magistrates’ Court on January 26.

Adam Stock, 26, a chef, of Westcombe Hill, London, was arrested in Spitalfield Lane, Chichester, on December 13 and charged with having 77mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system, driving without a licence and driving without insurance. He is due to appear before Worthing Magistrates’ Court on January 5.

John Duignan, 40, unemployed, of Queens Park Road, Brighton, was arrested at Stanmer Park, Brighton on December 14 and charged with being in charge of a motor vehicle while having 111mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system. He is due to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on January 4.

Mwila Chongo, 39, a care assistant, of Merlin Close in Tangmere, Chichester, was arrested on the A27 at Salvington on December 14 and charged with having 46mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system. He is due to appear before Worthing Magistrates’ Court on January 5.

Paul Wright, 36, unemployed, of Preston Road, Brighton, was arrested in The Avenue, Brighton, on 14 December and charged with having 77mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system, driving without insurance, driving while disqualified and possession of heroin. He was remanded in custody to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (December 16).

Vincent Gould, 55, a car salesman, of Hornby Road, Brighton, was arrested in Crowhurst Road, Brighton, on December 14 and charged with having 88mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system. He is due to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on December 31.

Lucy Weekes, 36, a housekeeper, of June Lane in Midhurst, was arrested on the A272 at Rogate on December 15 and charged with having 159mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system. She was due to appear before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (December 16).
