Matthew Daley showed little emotion as he sat in the dock this morning while waiting to find out how long his sentence will be – and where he will serve it.

On May 16 a jury found Daley guilty of the manslaughter of 79-year-old Don Lock, who he stabbed 39 times in what was described by Sussex Police as a ‘frenzied attack’.

The incident happened on July 16 last year when Daley braked suddently in his car on the A24 in Findon and Mr Lock drove into the back of his vehicle.

Today the judge, Mr Justice Rabinder Singh, heard evidence from consultant forensic psychiatrist Dr Roderick Ley about Daley’s behaviour and mental condition following the conviction, and questioned the prosecution and defence.

In an earlier discussion with David Howker QC, Daley’s defence, Justice Singh said he was ‘certainly considering the imposition of a life sentence’.

Daley, who was previously diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and psychosis, has now been rediagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
