County News: Man accused of starting a fire in a hospice

A 67-year-old man is to appear in court accused of starting a fire in a hospice.

Rodney Smith, of Quarry Hill, St Leonards, has been charged with arson with intent to endanger life.

He will appear before magistrates on a date to be fixed.

The charge relates to a fire at St Michael’s Hospice in St Leonards that broke out in the early hours of Saturday July 11.

Two patients at the hospice - 62-year-old Jill Moon and 81-year-old David Denness - suffered smoke inhalation during the fire. They died in hospital later.
