The 21-year-old woman woke up at an unknown address in Worthing on the morning of October 20, having spent the previous evening out with friends in Brighton.

She states that she cannot recall how she got there, and the incident was only reported to police a few weeks later and further information has since come to light, according to Sussex Police.

Upon leaving the address, the complainant shared a taxi to a nearby cash point with a man named Craig, who withdrew some money to pay for the fare. He then left the vehicle, which continued to Hove, where the woman was dropped off.

Later that day, she discovered bleeding and injuries consistent with a serious sexual assault.

It has since emerged that the vehicle which took her to Hove may not have been a licensed taxi.

Detective Constable Sarah Lovett said: “During the journey, the driver mentioned that he knew Craig and his family, and had worked for them for a number of years. We have made extensive enquiries to local taxi companies, all of which were negative. This makes me think the taxi may have been off the books, or just a friend doing a favour.

“In order to assist in our investigation, we are keen to talk to the man named Craig or the taxi driver who took the complainant home.”
