Couple donate £7,000 to new Worthing Hospital paediatric A&E department

A “GENEROUS” sum of almost £7,000 has been donated to the new paediatric A & E department at Worthing Hospital.

Margaret and Peter Saywell, who run aircraft company Saywell International based in Downlands Business Park, raised the money by holding racing track days at Goodwood.

Peter said: “Visiting hospital is a thing most of us dread for many reasons, and for children even more so. My wife and I were proud to fund-raise for the new children’s A & E department, which will make their visits less traumatic.

“Saywell International is passionate about supporting the local community, and this is sometimes achieved through another passion of mine – supercars.

“We hold track days at Goodwood for like-minded supercar owners to raise money for charity. This time, we chose the ‘Help us help the next Generation’ campaign at Worthing Hospital.”

The donation will be spent on equipment needed to get the new children’s A & E department fully-operational.

Lesley-Anne Lloyd, head of charity operations at the hospital, said: “We are extremely grateful to Peter and Margaret, to all of the staff at Saywell International and to everyone who took part in the track day.

“The new paediatric A & E department will be a safe and welcoming environment which aims to alleviate some of the stress that taking a child to the emergency department can bring.”

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust is investing £1.9 million in the new, dedicated area for children within the existing A & E department at Worthing Hospital.

The plans include four treatment rooms, a dedicated children’s resuscitation bay, a dedicated plaster room and an interactive play area within the children’s waiting room.

A Worthing Hospital spokesman said: “The new children’s A & E will create an enhanced environment for all children who come to the Worthing A & E department and improve both the quality of care they receive, and their experience as patients.”

The building work is on target for the scheduled opening in December.
