It seems likely it was a tragic accident, but police would only say today that the circumstances were not suspicious.

Her body was discovered at around 9.30am near the Onslow Arms pub, in Loxwood, in the lock by the road bridge over the B2133 which runs alongside a popular footpath.

Six members of a fire service technical rescue team were called in to recover her body.

The coroner has been informed.

But the identity of the woman, who lived in the Loxwood area, is not likely to be released until next week.

Spokesman for the Wey and Arun Canal Trust Rob Searle said: “We cooperated fully with police and closed the lock when the discovery was made this morning.

“We were told at 3pm that police had finished their investigations on site and the lock is now available to be used again.”
