County News: Tribute to ‘deeply loved’ woman after hospice fire

A tribute has been paid to a woman who died after a hospice fire in St Leonards.

Jill Moon, 62, of St Helens Crescent, was a patient at St Michael’s Hospice when the fire broke out in the early hours of July 11.

She and another patient suffered from smoke inhalation and died at Conquest Hospital several hours after.

Her family’s tribute said: “Jill Moon was an amazing person, who will be sadly missed. She was deeply loved by many, and was a deeply loving person.

“After the tragic events of the fire at St Michael’s Hospice, we urge the investigation to be dealt with as quickly and thoroughly as possible so that we can proceed with commemoration of Jill’s life with the dignity and respect that she deserves.

“We wish to be left to grieve in private and will not be making any further statements.”

Rodney Smith, 67, of Quarry Hill, St Leonards, is due to appear in court charged with arson with intent to endanger life.
