Tristan Voorspuy, who attended Eastbourne College from 1968-1973 and lived at the family home in Folkington, was the founder of the luxury safari company Offbeat Safaris.

He was born in South Africa but raised in Sussex. He was in the British Army for six years, leaving in 1981. After leaving the army he moved to Cape Town after working for a safari company, and he created Offbeat Safaris in 1990.

Mr Voorspuy was killed on Sunday in Laikipia while inspecting some of his lodges.

He had been looking at a lodge in his Sosian ranch that had been set alight, according to local authorities.

A spokesperson from Offbeat Safaris said: “Tristan was a wonderful man. A true conservationist, gentleman and thoroughly decent man. He sadly leave behind Cindy and children Archie and Imogen.”

Mombasa-based business Scenic Air Safaris posted a tribute on its Facebook page, saying: “It is with very, very deep sadness that we report the tragic death of Tristan Voorspuy co-owner of Offbeat Safaris and Sosian Ranch in an incident in Laikipia today, Sunday March 4.

“Our thoughts and prayers go to his wife Cindy and family and to his friends and partners at Sosian Lodge and Offbeat Safaris. A true officer and a gentleman.”

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are offering support to the family of the British national who has died in Kenya and we are in touch with local authorities.”
