County news: Railway station evacuated in handbag false alarm

A railway station in Sussex was evacuated after staff found a suspicious packaged on a train this afternoon (Monday, January 4).

The package in Hastings turned out to be a handbag and the station was reopened after 20 minutes.

Station staff and police officers viewed the bag and it was established that it was of innocent origin.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “Officers were alerted to an incident at Hasting rail station on Monday, January 11, following reports of unattended bag on board a train.

“The call came into police at 1.55pm.

“Colleagues form Sussex Police attended the station and carried out a search.

“The station was temporarily evacuated.

“The package was not deemed to be suspicious.

“The station has now been reopened.”
