County councillors oppose PCC fire service takeover
County councillors have signalled opposition to allowing Sussex's Police and Crime Commissioner to take over West Sussex's fire and rescue service today (Friday May 27).
Katy Bourne has written to leader of West Sussex County Council Louise Goldsmith this week setting out her intention to explore whether there is a business case for the move.
In a meeting today Mrs Goldsmith described proposals as a ‘distraction we do not need’ and invited Home Secretary Theresa May to see the work that the service is delivering in West Sussex.
She said: “I’m firmly of the view we have a uniquely excellent model and one I would not want to see it put at risk.”
A number of county councillors from all parties spoke out against proposals.
