Councillors to be given iPads or laptops worth up to £37k

Councillors voted to give themselves brand new iPads or laptops – costing the taxpayer up to £37,000 – because they believe it will help them save money.

The plans were unanimously approved on Thursday at a meeting of the joint strategic committee of the two councils – despite the fact some councillors admitted to already owning iPads, laptops and Blackberries.

The equipment will first be trialled to decide which product would be most suitable for council duties then given to up to 66 councillors across Worthing and Adur.

Options to be considered include laptops, costing £560 per member, an iPad 2, at £290, or iPad 3s or Microsoft Surface tablets – both of which would cost less than a laptop but more than an iPad 2.
