Council tax could rise after precept increase at meeting

RESIDENTS could see their council tax bills rise by 18.2 per cent in the next financial year.

Steyning Parish Council announced its precept for 2014/2015 would be £229,418 at a meeting on Monday night in the Steyning Centre.

The rise is the equivalent to £13.33 per household each year or 25 pence per week based on a band D council tax property.

Councillor Gill Muncey voiced concerns at the size of the increase.

“A lot of people haven’t had wage rises and 18.2 per cent seems like a very large increase to me. I’m concerned it might send out the wrong message that we aren’t aware or we aren’t taking into account financial situation some people are in,” she said.

“I realise we are amongst the highest spending parishes in West Sussex but I would be loath to lose any one of our services.”

The Council provides a contribution for the swimming pool, maintains and runs the toilets in the High Street as well as the Steyning Centre.
