Tim Macpherson, 53, is heavily involved in conservation work and has been campaigning on behalf of the Angling Trust to ensure the new Marine Conservation Zone at Kingmere Reef, off Littlehampton, and local fish stocks are managed sensibly.

Born in Hastings, he now lives in Battle with his wife and three children and runs a digital publishing and media communications business in the area.

Mr Macpherson is the driving force behind the Bexhill Festival of the Sea.

“Having lived in the Sussex most of my life, I have a good understanding of the issues, both within urban centres and in the surrounding rural areas,” he said.

“I will work for the continued regeneration of four main centres in the constituency – East Worthing, Sompting and Lancing, Shoreham and Southwick.”

Major challenges to overcome included where to locate much-needed housing developments, he said.

“The current plan to build on the flood plain west of the Adur will just stoke up trouble for the future.”

Welcoming Labour’s pledge to end the health services sell-off and scrap the Tory health act, Mr Macpherson said his parents devoted their lives to the NHS.

He added: “I became active in the Labour Party to campaign against inequality - gender, sexual, racial and social. That means everyone having the best start in life, and the best treatment available free at the point of need.”

Mr Macpherson was selected in an all-member vote by East Worthing and Shoreham Labour Party last Wednesday.

Chairman Irene Reed said: “Tim is the right man to challenge the Tory Tim Loughton. He has got great energy, he is a terrific communicator – and he’s firmly committed to helping us deliver a Labour government in this crucial general election.

“Labour has a raft of progressive policies which address the major issues facing our nation and these resonate on a local level – bringing the rail companies into public ownership, scrapping the iniquitous Tory health act and rebuilding our economy so that it can work for everyone.”
