College serves up recipe for success

A COLLEGE hospitality department hopes the Adur and Worthing Business Awards chefs will not be the only caterers hailed at this year’s prize-giving ceremony.

Northbrook College hospitality curriculum leader Peter Whiffin has nominated the department in two categories.

He hopes they will be victorious in both the outstanding contribution to the community and hospitality, tourism and leisure awards.

He said: “The hospitality department at Northbrook College contributes to the local area by engaging young people from the age of 14 to work within the hospitality industry.

“The majority of our students start with us at 16, having limited or no experience of working within the community.

“We engage with our community in various ways, which broadens the outlook of our students and enriches their learning.”

To enable this engagement, the department has built up links with schools, community groups and local hospitality providers.

When Arun Community Centre’s lunch club for seniors was in danger of ending, Northbrook stepped in to provide the catering.

Chairman Val Jerram said: “Not only were our members happy that we were going to be able to continue the next month at the same cost but they were thrilled to find out that the delicious meals were going to be prepared for them by the very professional students.

“It did not take much time for the word to spread and we have gone from a handful of members to now, where we are at full capacity, with 30 people on out list.”

Davison High School for Girls, in Worthing, were assisted by the team at its half-termly meetings and fundraising events.

Community manager Nimie Bunyard wrote in a testimonial letter to the department: “Your hospitality students at Northbrook college are a credit to you and themselves.

“Giving up your time to help others is a great attribute. The ‘mocktails’ they made up for the FODS ‘pre-prom evening’ fundraiser’ were an outstanding success and delicious at the same time.

“The FODS winter fair is our biggest fundraiser of the year and once again you and your hospitality students did a marvellous job with the pancakes they cooked.”

The deadline for nominations for this year’s awards closes tomorrow.
