Chris puts his best foot foward

SHOREHAM Beach runner Chris Nelson is putting his best foot forward to take part in next month's New York City Marathon.

Chris, 41, has always wanted to run a marathon and has been trying for a place in the London Marathon for a number of years.

"I started training for the 2006 event in late 2005, but didn't receive a place," he said.

"Rather than wait another year before applying for London, I decided to look for an alternative race.

"New York seemed like an obvious choice, particularly as it is run in the winter and I find running in cold weather much easier than in the heat.

"That said, in order to run a winter marathon, you have to train during the summer months and, although I've enjoyed this summer's weather, I would have really liked colder days for the long runs of up to 20 miles."

Having chosen the marathon, he then had to decide which charity would benefit from his efforts.

He has chosen Dreams Come True '“ the national charity which helps fulfil the dreams of terminally and seriously ill children.

His aim is to raise 2,000 for the charity and, so far, he has been pledged 600.

He will be running the 26.2-mile marathon across New York on November 5. He completed the 2006 Sussex Beacon Half Marathon in two hours and 33 minutes in February. Anyone who would like to help Chris should visit his sponsorship page www.justgiving.com/nelsonchris.
