The BHOS Musical Theatre Choir is part of the south of England’s oldest theatre company, Brighton and Hove Operatic Society.

The company, which will celebrate its 132nd birthday in December, started a choir in Brighton last year, specifically to try to engage with the community by offering relaxed and fun singing sessions for people of all abilities.

Choir leader Laura Redmond, who has been a member of the company since the age of eight, said: “We tentatively launched the choir in September of 2017 with a post on our Facebook page. Our first term was a real success, with 24 singers from all different backgrounds.

“Since then our Brighton choir has grown to 45 members and we are now launching our Worthing choir. We have a wide range of abilities from professional and West End performers to first-time singers and the sound we have produced in our first year is fantastic.

“We are looking for professionals, amateurs and complete beginners to join us for our next term, starting on September 10. Choirs are a fantastic way of engaging with your community and we recognised that a choir concentrating purely on musical theatre will offer something a little different from other local choirs.”

The Brighton choir has performed two charity showcases at the end of each term, most recently being at RNIB Wavertree House in Hove.

One volunteer said: “The residents at Wavertree House really enjoyed the choir. I went to watch them along with another lady at work and thought the show was brilliant.

“The residents have asked me if they are doing a Christmas show and would they come and do a run again at the home.”

The Worthing choir will also be performing charity showcases. Rehearsals are at Emmanuel United Reformed Church, St Michael’s Road, Worthing, on Mondays at 7.30pm.

The Brighton choir meets at the Church of the Good Shepherd, in Dyke Road, Hove, on Wednesday evenings.
