Charity tells women living with heart disease: ‘You are not alone’

A WOMAN who survived a heart attack has praised a new initiative from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to raise awareness of women suffering with heart disease.

A virtual women’s room has been created as a supportive space for women living with the disease. It features stories of real women living with heart disease and offers practical information to help women adjust to life with a heart condition.

Recent figures released by the BHF show that each year 280 women in Arun, 190 women in Worthing and 110 women in Adur die from heart and circulatory diseases.

In addition, more than 450,000 women in the South East live with a heart or circulatory condition.

Christine Durrant, 60, of Brighton Road, Lancing, had a heart-attack while watching the 2010 World Cup on television.

She said: “There’s evidence that more women will die of heart problems than cancer.

“It’s surprising because cancer is so high-profile for women but no-one realises how many people have heart conditions. I think it needs to be highlighted.

“The web-page is an excellent idea, it needs to be brought to the attention of more women.”
