Charity show for hospice with '˜big concert sound'

The band of more than 30 musicians is returning to the St Paul’s Centre, in Chapel Road, Worthing, for the concert on Saturday, April 5, at 7.30pm, to raise money for the hospice, which is in Worthing and serves the town and surrounding area.

Led by their musical director, Andrew Burchfield, the band will play items such as music from stage and screen, swing, concert pieces and marches.

These will be performed without amplification, but with a big concert sound.

Tickets are £8 for adults, £6 concessions, with accompanied under-14s free. Book at the venue on 01903 368967, at St Barnabas House on 01903 254777, or call Jo on 01444 235311. Tickets will also be available on the door.

Refreshments will be available from the Lime Café in the centre.

The band rehearses at Southwick Methodist Church, in Manor Hall Road on Saturdays in term times, from 9.30am to midday.

There are regular performances in the area, as well as trips and mini-tours further a field, and the band plays from a wide range of genres.

Venues include the Assembly Hall and St Paul’s Centre in Worthing, Brighton Pavilion Lawns, the Barn Theatre in Southwick, Eastbourne and Bournemouth bandstands. Recent tours have been to Brussels, Edinburgh, Rheims and the Channel Islands.

At the end of May, the band visits Ghent in Belgium to perform a Saturday evening concert with a band from the town, in aid of the Foundation Contre le Cancer.

Band members come from Shoreham, Steyning, Hove, Brighton, Worthing, Crawley and Chichester.

The community band welcomes musicians aged 18 and over who can play a wind instrument or percussion. Standards range from beginners to semi-professional musicians but those who have not reached grade five standard may find the music challenging.

The fundraising event on April 5, A Spring Concert, will include a raffle.
