Celebrations as Shoreham beach boardwalk nears completion

EVERYONE can enjoy a stroll along the seaside this summer thanks to a long-awaited extension to the Shoreham beach boardwalk, from Shingle Road, along to The Burrells roundabout.

Started in 2011, the boardwalk project has cost approximately £200,000, an investment made by Adur District Council (ADC) as one of its key Capital projects. The final piece of the puzzle – an 80m section which will form the access path from Winterton Way, will be completed by the end of August.

When fully complete, the boardwalk will open up more than 1.2km of Shoreham’s beach front.

Chairman of Shoreham Beach Residents’ Association Joss Loader said the boardwalk was welcomed by residents.

“We think it’s a great community initiative that opens up the beach to people with mobility issues, especially those in wheelchairs or who use mobility scooters. It is also a great facility for people with young children, who might otherwise struggle to walk along the beach.

“It’s great news it has been finished in time for the school holidays.”

Jackie Woolcock, from the Friends of Shoreham Beach, said the group was ‘delighted’ with the extension.

“This makes it much easier for everyone to access and enjoy the beach. We are very grateful to the council.”

Adur District councillor Ben Stride added: “The council has done a good job by providing an improved specification material for the extension works. They have also listened to concerns raised by residents and as a result will be providing an additional boardwalk link north to Winterton Way.

“I do hope monies can now be found to extend the boardwalk eastwards to the Old Fort as soon as possible. I have also received requests from Shoreham Beach residents to extend the boardwalk westwards from Ferry Road along to Beach Green and also for it to go all the way down to Widewater.”

Councillor Keith Dollemore, executive member for the environment at ADC, said: “The majority of the boardwalk is now complete – and it looks fantastic. Importantly, it allows the beach and amazing natural vistas to be enjoyed by all – previously it was nearly impossible for anyone living with a mobility issue to get across the stones to watch the sunset and waves breaking.”
