Celebrations planned for Queen's 90th birthday

Events were held by many for Her Majesty’s real birthday in April and more are now planned on and around the official celebration weekend of June 11 and 12.

Street parties, tea parties, commemorative trees and even DVDs are being planned throughout Sussex in honour of the occasion.

In Shoreham, the town church, St Mary de Haura, in East Street, will be ringing a full peal of bells on Saturday.

Churchwarden Ian Tompkin said: “It will be a full peal lasting around three hours. The ringers are those from around the county who have requested to undertake a full peal.

“They hope to begin the peal around 10am and complete the peal around 1pm. As St Mary’s is so prominent in the centre of the town, this does add to the importance of this important event.

“This is to be an additional event during the Adur Festival and it is most appropriate that it should take place this coming weekend.”

In Worthing, a birthday picnic is planned at Steyne Gardens from midday to 3pm on Saturday. People are invited to take along their own picnic and free activities will be provided, including Circus Seen teaching circus skills, live music, drum lessons with Simba Arts and crown making with Interesting Arts.

Organiser Diane Guest, councillor for Heene Ward, said: “I thought it was crucial that all the residents of Worthing could join in and celebrate the Queen’s birthday without it being expensive.

“I also planned the party so all the children who come along are kept busy and active, be it football or hula hooping, for three glorious hours of outside play.”

The first 100 people to arrive will receive a free Union Flag and will be featured in a group photo to commemorate the day.

In Littlehampton, there will be a coffee morning at The Flower Shop, in Wick Street, Wick, today from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

There will be a raffle with a first prize of flowers for a year and money will be raised for Cancer Research UK. Also on offer will be homemade cakes, a tombola and games.
