Car chase ends with five in custody

FIVE men have been arrested after a car chase through Shoreham, Lancing, Sompting and Worthing.

Police were called to a report of a window being broken in Kingsland Close, Shoreham, at 12.39am today (Wednesday, August 3), and the offenders driving off in a Peugeot 106, which was spotted near Southlands Hospital a few minutes later.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “It failed to stop for police and was pursued towards Steyning and then through Sompting and Lancing before crashing into a sign in Chatsworth Road, Worthing.

“It was stopped at 1.02am at the junction of Brighton Road and the High Street where some of the occupants decamped.”

A South East Air Support Unit helicopter, which was returning to its base at Shoreham Airport from a job on the Isle of Wight, helped to find the car and the runners.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, taking a motor vehicle without consent (TWOC), dangerous driving, failing to stop and drink/drug driving, and another, also 19, also from Worthing, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, TWOC, dangerous driving and failing to stop. Both are from Worthing

Two 19-year-olds from Bognor Regis were also arrested, one on suspicion of criminal damage, TWOC, dangerous driving, failing to stop, drink/drug driving and assaulting/obstructing a police officer, and the other on suspicion of being a passenger in a vehicle taken without consent.

An 18-year-old man, also from Bognor Regis, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, failing to stop and drink driving.
