Sussex residents were said to be '˜overwhelmingly' in favour of Brexit after a meeting on the EU with MP Tim Loughton.

The MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, who has openly declared he is for leaving the EU, held one of his ‘Talk to Tim’ public meetings on Saturday in which he invited constituents to come and express their views about the upcoming referendum on Britain’s EU membership.

Issues raised at the meeting, held at the Barn Theatre in Southwick Street, Southwick, included concerns over immigration and security of the UK and President Obama’s remarks about the country going to the ‘back of the queue’.

Mr Loughton said: “I want to have a proper debate, without scare stories, on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union and what our continued membership, or not, will mean for our future. Many residents felt that President Obama was interfering in a UK matter and his remarks about the UK going to the ‘back of the queue’ were particularly crass, while a few pointed out the blatant hypocrisy in asking the UK to accept terms that the US never would, such as free movement of people with poorer nations and relinquishment of sovereignty to a foreign bureaucracy.”

Other issues brought up included whether the EU would continue to export fish to the UK, how state aid rules and barriers affect government ability, and free movement around the EU for members.

Tim added: “I am looking forward to the hustings which various local groups are organising so I can get to grips with the opposition who want us to stay in.”
