Bourne hires her PCC deputy

SUSSEX police and crime commissioner Katy Bourne has defied the board which scrutinises her work by appointing a Worthing councillor as her deputy against their recommendation.

Mrs Bourne put her proposal to install Goring ward councillor Steve Waight as her second-in-command to the Police and Crime Panel at the end of January.

After consideration, the panel decided not to recommend the appointment of Waight, due to his ongoing commitments as a councillor.

But with the final decision, Mrs Bourne defiantly decided on Monday to her plan of appointing Mr Waight to the £45,000 a-year job.

She said: “I am confident that his proven ability and experience will enable him to fulfil the role to the high standard required for the people of Sussex.

“I will continue to monitor his performance and time commitment and this will be available for public scrutiny.”

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Waight said he was looking forward to the challenges of the role.
