The ‘log jam’, in a culvert under the road in Shooting Field, had sent water gushing out over the road.

West Sussex County Council staff had worked last Saturday to clear the six-inch branch, which was causing a pile-up of debris in the culvert, but it was stuck fast.

The Environment Agency pumped the water to bypass the blockage and clear the road of water while a specialist clearance team was put into place.

David Barling, county councillor for Bramber Castle, said: “They also managed to patch up and repair the surface of the road, which had been damaged as a result of the water penetration.

“It cannot have been any fun at all dealing with this in wet and windy weather. The road was not only kept open but the damaged surface was patched the same day.”

He said the stream, which runs beside Tanyard Lane, had flooded before, but never like this or to such a magnitude.
