Bath tub race scuttled

ORGANISERS have pulled the plug on the Adur Bath Tub Race.

After 35 races and raising 250,000 over the years for local charities, Shoreham and Southwick Round Table, which organises the event, said excessive drinking and injuries caused by people throwing eggs and stones had contributed to the decision to scrap it.

Race committee chairman Tony Jelliman said: "It's a wacky race which has generally been great fun, but increasing health and safety requirements, insurance rates and other problems mean that this kind of activity is no longer viable."

Tracey Weston, landlady of the King's Head, Upper Beeding, which is near the starting line of the race, said: "It's a real disappointment. It is one of our best days of the year for takings.

"We have four or five teams from the pub who enter the race and no one's ever been hurt."
