Artist’s work to feature in BBC TV police drama

AN ARTIST is ‘excited’ to have her original artwork featured in new Shoreham-based BBC drama, Cuffs.

Sue Collins has been a member of Shoreham Art Gallery for the last 18 months, and was surprised to receive a phone call from a production designer at the BBC.

“They had been into the gallery and seen my work,” said Sue.

“One of the main characters is an artist and my work is actually going to be used in the character’s house.”

After browsing the gallery, the production designer visited Sue’s home in Hassocks to see more of her work.

The mother of three specialises in lino print art and has been selling her work since she graduated from Northbrook College in Worthing four years ago.

“I’m predominantly print making. They took a lino cut print of Devil’s Dyke that was handmade and is one of a kind,” she said.

Shoreham Art Gallery, in Brunswick Road, is run by a collective of more than 20 independent local artists.

Their wide range of work is on display in the gallery, including stained glass, pottery, sculpture, wood carving, embroidered lampshades, hand sewn bags, jewellery, photographs and paintings.

“There’s always an artist on duty in the gallery,” added the 51-year-old.

On top of the lino print, the production designer has also chosen three paintings of Sue’s that depict the Jack and Jill Windmill, Butcher’s Wood – both located in Hassocks – and one of Sussex sheep.

“It’s exciting,” said Sue, “I feel quite privileged.”

Tiger Aspect Productions has currently set up base in vacant parts of Adur Civic Centre and is using other locations across Shoreham to film the eight-part series, called Cuffs.

The new fast-paced contemporary police show will be fronted by actors, Amanda Abbington of Mr Selfridge, Ashley Walters and Peter Sullivan.

Sue said she has been advised to hold onto the original pieces of art in case the show requires them again in the near future.

The talented artist’s work will also feature at this year’s Adur Art Trail located at Old School House Gallery in Ham Road, Shoreham from May 30 to June 14.

“It is right by the Civic Centre where the BBC are filming the show,” added Sue.

“They will be filming it until the end of July.”
