A host of activities are planned on the Slindon Estate on Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

The trust’s rangers will be dusting off their giant apple press and there will be a massive display of apple cultivars, traditional fête games such as skittles, coconut shy and apple bobbing, live folk music and a bar.

Mark Wardle, lead ranger, said: “I love that this is such a hands-on family event. Everyone can help with the chopping, scratting and pressing, using the team’s own traditional rack and cloth press, and afterwards try the freshest apple juice you have ever tasted – straight from the press.”

Two stars of the day will be apple identification experts Peter Collett and Paul Barnett, who will have more than 100 different varieties on show, from the biggest cooking apples to the tiny Knobby russet. People are invited to take along apples from their garden for identification.

Apple-based cookery demonstrations will be provided by Community Chef, Fishbourne Mill Morris will dance and there will be musical performances including South Downs Folk Singers.

There will also be a farmers’ market with food and traditional crafts for sale.

The event will be held alongside Slindon community orchard, in the field behind Slindon Forge Café and Shop, in Reynolds Lane, Slindon. Free parking is available and entry is £1 per person.
