Another motorist is given '˜ridiculous' parking ticket

Parking in the town centre for just over an hour has left a St Barnabas nurse £50 short.

Janet Wilkinson, 56, of Leconfield Road, Lancing, popped into the town on February 6, to do some shopping and parked in the Montague Centre Car Park, in Liverpool Gardens.

She had no idea this would later result in her being slapped with the hefty fine – a second motorist in the last month to express anger over the car park, run by CP Plus.

She said: “It is ridiculous, the machine told me to pay 50p and would not let me amend the amount. I then received the fine a couple of weeks later telling me I had paid insufficient funds and if I didn’t pay it within 28 days it would increase to £90. It is clear there is something wrong with the machine and the car park is scaremongering people.

“Vulnerable people will be scared about receiving the fine, which is a lot of money.”

The 56-year-old, who lives with her partner, Karl Hughes, 57, appealed the fine but this was rejected by CP Plus two days later. She now faces paying the full £90 – if she fails to pay £50 within 14 days.

The nurse who works at St Barnabas House hospice in Titnore Lane, Worthing, is now taking her appeal further to POPLA (Working On Private Land Appeals).

She added: “I hope the fine is cancelled and the machines are looked into. Only one machine is working anyway so you are already wasting your time standing in the queue in the first place.”

Dozens of drivers have previously contacted the Herald, concerned about the car park.

A spokesman from CP Plus said: “We understand the inconvenience of receiving a PCN, however there are clear instructions on how to use the machine if it does not recognise the number plate of your vehicle. If the system fails to pick up your vehicle, you have to put in the correct registration and the approximate time of arrival – 50p is simply the first tariff.

“In addition – we are unaware of drivers having similar issues as we have had very few appeals relating to this.”
